Gelifluction



Gelifluction is a geological process that occurs in areas with permafrost, or permanently frozen ground. It is the gradual downhill movement of soil and rock under the influence of gravity, due to the thawing of the top layer of the permafrost. During the summer months, the top layer of the permafrost thaws, creating a layer of water-saturated soil called an active layer. The active layer can be several meters thick and has little strength, which makes it susceptible to deformation and movement. The movement is usually slow, but over time, it can cause significant changes to the landscape. Gelifluction typically occurs in high-latitude and high-altitude regions, such as the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. It can create distinctive landforms such as terracettes, which are ridges of soil and rock that form parallel to the direction of movement. These landforms can provide important clues to past climate and environmental conditions.
